Project Territoires Cultivés : culture and sustainable territorial development in the mediterranean

The cultural sector as a driver of sustainable territorial development and a lever for ecological transition. A cooperation project coordinated by AVITEM in partnership with local authorities from France and Turkey.

A partnership bringing together three French local authorities — the Nice Côte d’Azur Metropolis, the Municipality of Vitrolles, and the Collectivity of Corsica — and one Turkish local authority, the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality.

AVITEM plays a key role in connecting local authorities from the partner territories, fostering growing synergy among cultural stakeholders, spatial planning actors, and those involved in ecological transition. The aim is to initiate a lasting dialogue and build bridges between sectors that are often too compartmentalised.

The project Forums

A series of events addressing the common challenges of Mediterranean territories, through open forums organised in each of the French partner local authorities, culminating in a final symposium in Izmir to close the project. These exchange venues bring together a wide range of stakeholders from the fields of culture and ecology, public authorities, elected officials, students, and more.

First Forum: culture and ecological transition for a sustainable Mediterranean

On 28 and 29 November 2024, the City of Nice will host the first Open Forum of the project.
The event coincide with the  Mediterranean Day, and provides an opportunity to highlight the cultural and environmental challenges facing Mediterranean countries.

Productions and Commitments

The discussions held during the forums result in concrete outputs in the form of practical booklets, action-oriented guides, and tools tailored to the local realities of the partner local authorities, which can be transferred to other territories.

Around 5 priority areas:

    • Mediterranean cultural identities and the relationship with landscapes and resources
    • Culture as a link between territories
    • The living world at the heart of culture
    • Culture against climate change and for resilience
    • Multi-stakeholder cultural governance as a guarantee of resilience

The local authorities commit by signing the Manifesto of Mediterranean Cities for Culture and Ecology.
