Melimed project

MeliMed aims to raise awareness among architecture students and professionals about these issues through a new training program focused on the coastal planning of Mediterranean cities facing climate change.

Mediterranean territories are under dual pressure:

  • Demographic: The Mediterranean population grew from 105 million in 1960 to 444 million in 2017, with 70% living in urban areas.
  • Climate-related: Warming could reach +2.2°C by 2040 and +3.8°C locally by 2100, leading to extreme events such as rising sea levels, flooding, and desertification.

Given the lack of specialized training in architecture schools, MeliMed proposes a multidisciplinary approach to address the resilience of Mediterranean territories.

Key Actions:

  • Development of transnational training modules and resources for professionals.
  • Strengthening Master’s programs with the goal of creating a joint complementary Master’s degree.

Case Studies

Three territories are analyzed through collaborative workshops, combining the expertise of educators to propose solutions tailored to climate challenges:

  • Tanger-Tétouan Region (Morocco)
  • Venice Lagoon (Italy)
  • Aix-Marseille-Provence Metropolis (France)

The project in brief

Urbanisation is increasing on the Mediterranean coastline, strongly accentuating the natural risks (flooding, erosion, tremors, etc.).

The project brings together 5 partners in Italy, Morocco and France.
