AVITEM’s webinar dedicated to waste innovation in the Mediterranean was held on Thursday, June 3, 2021.
For the occasion, the AVITEM partners met in order to explore the many ways in which traditional knowledge can be reconciled with the use of innovative solutions, which are numerous in the Mediterranean region.
As a reminder, here is the agenda this link.
Before providing you with the exhaustive content, we offer you a very quick summary below, highlighting the main ideas.
The use of the graphic synthesis of our young and talented draftswoman also proposes a reading of the exchanges of this fruitful morning. You can find this graphical overview in full screen, it’s over here!
Ambassador Philippe Meunier, Director General of AVITEM, opened the morning session with a welcome and an introduction that reminded us that, in the face of common challenges, it was essential to continue to work together to build sustainable urban territories, which the quality of the networks mobilized suggested.
Representatives from the City of Miramas, the Pays d’Aix Waste Advisory Council, the Med-InA project led by AVITEM and the HaaS Synchronicity collective led the first session by sharing their knowledge and individual experiences. The positions taken during this first session converged on the idea that cooperation, citizen involvement and the combination of traditional knowledge and innovation are all avenues that must be followed in order to fight against the proliferation of waste and optimize its management in the Mediterranean. This 1erasession was led by the repeated conviction that we must stop considering waste as a mere polluting residue and instead see it as an untapped resource.
The second session gave the floor to territorial actors who presented the realities of the field, whether in the Saharan zone, in urban or island territories. In addition, the aim was to compare these different geographical contexts in order to identify differences and commonalities in their territorial characteristics and their way of managing waste. We were able to learn a lot about the relationship with waste in the eco-city of Ksar Tafilelt, and more generally in the M’Zab Valley in Algeria. The 2ème The session continued with the presentation of the case study of the wilaya of Setif with an analysis particularly concerning the building sector with the main focus on the methodology based on LCA (life cycle assessment). The island of beauty was represented for the second consecutive time, in the presence of the OEC (Office of the Environment of Corsica) came to support this reflection on the management and recovery of waste according to the characteristics of the territories through its personal prism.
The third session focused on innovation, recalling the fragility of urban territories in the face of climate change and the resulting duty to rediscover sobriety and frugality by simultaneously combining the actions of all actors. The Inizià cluster, active on the Corsican territory, has demonstrated through its intervention that the support to innovation is powerful and that it strongly contributes to the animation of the territorial ecosystem in terms of ecological transition. Finally, three start-ups delivered their innovative solutions, with innovations in terms of biowaste composting and plastic waste reuse.
The audience greatly appreciated the quality of the interventions and the involvement of the speakers. The interventions complemented each other perfectly and the collective capacity to decline knowledge for the benefit of a shared Mediterranean intention proved to be very appropriate. The place of the human being, the role of governance and the work in solidarity networks have emerged as strong points of convergence within all the interventions. It is noted that, in the face of climatic hazards and changes in our ecosystems, our desire to work together to make the Mediterranean more welcoming, warmer, more egalitarian and more sustainable animates all the actors and their partners.
We will conclude this process with the organization of a transversal and conclusive webinar dedicated to Low-tech innovation on July 1, 2021.
